Salimetrics’ New, Smaller Packaging – Better for the Environment and Reduces Customer Costs

A simple, single box can deliver more value to customers.

Salimetrics’ mission is to produce relevant, high quality assays designed specifically for Salivary Bioscience. Researchers and Diagnostic labs know they can depend on Salimetrics assays to be the best choice. But sometimes, something as simple as a box can have value to customers. Starting in March, Salimetrics is launching a new, redesigned single kit box which is 33% smaller in volume, providing customers with substantial savings in shipping costs. Beyond costs, the smaller box uses more eco-friendly packaging materials. “We’ve reduced the amount of foam by 75% and the overall packaging material by 33%, which is a significant reduction on our environmental footprint as well,” says Salimetrics’ Director of Operations, Robert Larson Ph.D.

The idea to reduce their single kit box size stemmed from a conversation with a Salivary Bioscience researcher. While shipping costs are paid at a negotiated discount rate, the cost to ship overnight can still be significant. The researcher simply asked if there was anything else Salimetrics could do to reduce shipping costs. Over the next few months, a team at Salimetrics focused on the non-technical areas of product improvement investigated options to provide additional value to the research community. Says Dr. Larson, “For overnight freight, the best rule to follow is a simple one – ship small biotechnology products in the smallest box possible. Most biotechnology product shipments are based on a term called volumetric weight, or dimensional weight. If you are able to substantially reduce your box size, you can expect to substantially reduce your freight costs. It seems like such a small thing, and because of our commitment to continuous improvement, we were able to reduce the excess space in our packaging and provide a tremendous benefit to everyone.”

“All investigators will benefit in some way from the new assay kit box,” says Hans Schroeder, Salimetrics CEO. “It’s small improvements like this that show just how much Salimetrics cares about providing researchers with the best Salivary Bioscience experience. All areas of improvement have the potential to maximize value, and sometimes it’s the little things that help the Salivary Bioscience research community grow.”
